Question

With examples of modifications

Determine whether each of the following sentences is a statement, a predicate open sentences or neither. Justify your answers. A sentence may have more than one possible interpretation. If you indicate that a sentence is a statement or predicate, indicate the appropriate interpretation for such. If any sentence is neither a statement nor a predicate, indicate whether the sentence can be modified to become either a statement or a predicate and give an example of such a modification. No integer x satisfies x > x2. A dog is bigger than a cat. Shakespeare wrote many plays. x3 - 3x + 2 = 0.

Explanation / Answer

a) No integers x satisfies x>x^2.

well we know this is true for all x in Z and so it is a statement

b) A dog is bigger than a cat.

In this case we can't say this is true because not every dog is bigger than every cat.Generally its true but not for all cases.

so its neither true nor false.so its not a statement .and also its not part of any subject so we can't say its a predicate.

c) Shakespeare wrote many plays.

This is true because we know Shakespeare was a great poet and play writer. Hence this is a statement

d) x^3-3x^2+2=0

we are just given by an equation. For sure its not a statement

it can be a part of any subject for eg. 1 is a solution to the equation x^3-3x^2+2=0.

hence this is a predicate

thanks
