Question

Attached is an example of an ocean floor profile. Yours does not need to look exactly like this one. Also understand that distance-wise, it is compressed so that is why the undersea peaks and slopes look so steep. Scales of values on both axes and titles for both axes is important for proper communication of a graph.

The data in the table below represents various measurements of the depth of the Atlantic Ocean along a line from Cape May, New Jersey and Cape Roca, Portugal. Please notice the data is in two columns of distance and depth. Distance goes from 0 to 3500 miles eastward from Cape May You can use this data to construct a profile, or side view, of the floor of the Atlantic Ocean between these points. Use either a separate piece of graph paper or the ocean profile graph sheet provided. Distance from Cape May (miles 0 (Cape May) 100 125 325 475 650 900 1125 1300 1425 1475 1600 1900 2000 2150 Ocean Depth fathoms Distance from Cape May (miles 2200 2225 2325 2450 2475 2525 2700 2725 Ocean Depth fathoms 1150 100 1000 2000 2500 3000 2800 750 700 550 1000 2000 2800 2700 2300 3125 2900 2000 1600 2500 2100 1800 2800 3150 3300 3400 3425 3475 500 100 3500 (Portugal)

Explanation / Answer

1.

The maximum depth that is present in the table = 3,125 fathoms = 3,125 x 6 = 18,750 feets

The minimum depth that is present in the table = 0 fathoms = 0 x 6 = 0 feets

The depths are measured from the shoreline as we're seeing the depths at Cape May and Portugal is 0 fathoms which is only possible when it is measured from the shoreline.

2.

The maximum depthbetween New Jersey and Portugal is = 3,125 fathoms = 18,750 feets = (18,750) / (5,280) = 3.551136 miles.

3.

Depth at 2,700 miles = 2,000 fathoms

Depth at 2,800 miles = 2,800 fathoms

By using the averaging method, for 1 mile movement the depth change is = (2,800 - 2000) / (2,800 - 2,700) = 800/100 = 8 fathoms per mile

Therefore the depth as 2,725 miles = (Depth at 2,700 miles) + (25 x 8) = 2,000 + 200 = 2,200 fathoms

The assumption of averaging method is that the increase in depth took place uniformly between 2,700 miles to 2,800 miles.

4.

No, I won't be choosing the same scale for the axis of the graph as distance and depth are varing very differently with the variation in distance being very gradual while the variation of depth is very abrupt.
