Question
When a tree is tapped for maple syrup, what region is tappedand why? A. The xylem is tapped because it is transporting food fromthe roots to the upper regions of the tree. B. The cambium is tapped since the sap is found there. C. Xylem and phloem are tapped because these are vasculartissues. D. The phloem is tapped because it is transporting food fromthe roots to the upper regions of the tree. I know that the xylem & phloem are a transporting systemwith the xylem circulating water and minerals up from the rootsinto other parts of the tree and with the phloem transportingsugars from the upper region of the tree down to the roots. Becauseof this last part, it made me think that the answer would not be Dsince the phloem does not transport from the roots to upperregions, but rather in the opposite direction (even though thispart creates sugars). This would then eliminate C if I am correctwith my thinking about the phloem. The xylem transports food, but Ididn't know about syrup. Would the answer be B. the cambium?? You are on the the right tract, it is answer B, that is where the sap is found. We had a similar question in my Bio class for an extra credit quiz. Afterwards we all talked about it, more than half the class got it wrong because they thought it was the xylem and phloem since it is the transporting system, however, the remaining half chose the cambium. It is a bit tricky but definately answer B :)
