Question

Wetland Ecology SCI 302

Assignment # 1

Due Sunday of the 5th Module at 11:59 am

The intent of this assignment is to provide you with an introduction to writing a wetland field report and obtaining wetland information via the internet. Typically these reports document wetland conditions and provide baseline data for management activities, or future changes which may occur in the watershed. Please read the outline below, select a wetland site near your home which is accessible, and write a 2-3 page wetland field report containing the following information. Please include references, a NRCS soil map and a wetland map from the NWI. You can find the National Wetland Inventory at: https://www.fws.gov/wetlands/Data/Mapper.html

and the NRCS soil map at:  http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/HomePage.htm

Introduction

Describe location of the wetland (provide location map graphic)

Describe surrounding land uses and any particular history of land use alteration that may assist reader in understanding your wetlands’ character.

Describe hydrologic setting for the wetland using the hydrogeomorphic classification system. (i.e. “the subject wetland is a riverine wetland with unidirectional flows.”)

Hydrology

Provide the Cowardin water regime for the wetland – (i.e. the subject wetland is seasonally flooded or temporarily flooded or irregularly flooded…).

What is the dominant source of hydrology for the wetland?

Describe the surface water flow patterns outside of the wetland (upstream and downstream) and within the wetland (note any inlets or outlets to the wetland).

Provide a landscape perspective to the hydrologic patterns – how would the geology, soils and landform control the water flow patterns?

Soils

Describe the soils (provide a soils map which lists adjacent soils)

Do the soils classify as hydric soils?

Plants

Describe the dominant plant communities for the wetland. Example: The emergent class dominants consist of Phalaris arundinacea and Juncus effusus; the scrub-shrub class is dominated by Lonicera involucrata. “(always underline or italic scientific names).

Discussion/Conclusions

Here you discuss whether the site examined qualifies as a wetland based on the data collected and analysis.

Discuss the wetland from a landscape perspective, based on geology, soils and landscape setting. Is it sustainable given the landscape conditions present (i.e. will up-basin development radically alter flows and significantly impact the wetland?)

Explanation / Answer

Introduction-

Wetland is a land area that is saturated with the water additive permanently or seasonally such that it takes on the account of the characteristics of a distinct ecosystem within it. The primary factors that distinguished wetlands from the other form of lands and water bodies is the characteristics of the vegetation and the aquatic creatures adopted in this unique soil land. It plays a number of in the environmental principles like water purification of blood controls carbon sink and Shorelines instability. On every continent except Antarctica the largest and role of Amazon river basin and West Siberian plain.

As the name suggested that the wetland is a type of land which is always covered with the water bodies and water sources. Which types of plants are always seems to be wet otherwise the saturation of the rainwater aur bhai the groundwater table. These are always saturated and has state of flooded situation. According to the duration of the flooding system here we can estimate and determine the type of vegetation will be developed. The ecology of the steps of land can be characterized by the factors including fertility natural disturbance competition and salinity.

Hydrology-

The wetland hydrology is associated with the specials and the temporal dispersion flow fan chemical activation of the surface and groundwater table. According to the hydrology which types of wetland that can be characterized in the following basic as riverine,Lacustrine and Palustrine. The landscape characteristics of the steps of wetlands are hydrology and hydrochemistry determine the characteristics. Chemical molecules and fertility present in the soil of this types of land.in this Types of land the soil which is the have major nutrient cycle within at most of the nutrients which account in this types of plants and soils is included of sulphur carbon nitrogen phosphorus. Mostly there is anaerobic and aerobic respiration in the soil influence the nutrient cycling of the hydrogen carbon Oxygen and nitrogen.

Plants-

The vegetation of wetlands can be grow insulin and freshwater condition. Some specials plants have lot of flowers by the other fishes have long steps to allow the flowers to reach the surface of the water.

Animals-

There are many types of fishes are found in the fishes depend upon them wetland ecosystem so there any other types of habitat. Amphibians such as frog need both the tested is an Aquatic Habitat in which to produce and breed.frogs are used as a indicator of ecosystem has the due to their skin which absorb both nutrients and proxy inform the learning environment above average extensions rate in the unfavourable and polluted environmental conditions. reptiles such as alligators and the crocodiles are the common reptilian species found there. it have the mammals like short herbivorous to big mammals are also present there.
