Question
You are given three (3) different materials and told only that one is a single crystal ceramie, one an amorphous polymer and an amorphous metal. The following instruments are available to you: an SEM, an X-ray diffraction system, an optical microscope, a tensile tester, and a multimeter. Based on what you have learned about the structure and properties of material over the course of this term, describe the specific measurements/tests you would carry out to unambiguously determine which material is which. Be very precise in your answer.Explanation / Answer
Amorphous metal can be detected using a multimeter ,as it will show very low electrical resistance compared to the ceramic crystal and amorphous polymer.
The ceramic crystal can be determined using X ray diffraction system as the atoms in the crystalline structure diffract X rays into many specific directions. The angle and intensity of the detracted beam could be studied by a crystallographer to produce a 3D image of the density of electrons within the crystal.
An SEM(Scanning electron microscope) can also used to recognize the ceramic crystals. The SEM is based on electron diffraction similar to X rays,it produces a diffraction pattern ,which could be analysed to obtain a 3D view of crystal structure.
Amorphous polymer would have much higher resistance compared to amorphous metal and could be detected by a multimeter.Optical property of amorphous polymer can also be observed to specify. The polymer should have higher elasticity and tensile strength compared to ceramic crystal.
