Question
Say you are an engineer with EIT certificate and have just joined a manufacturing company. On very first day (today) of you job, there is a chaos in their production line. Problem is the following: "A grove cutting machine to cut 3 mm deep groves (1mm dia.) in aluminum sheet supposed to be running for 24times7. Gap between two consecutive groves supposed to be 2 mm. However, today the precision is lost and it is suspected that it happens due to overheating of the motor (from their past experience). Suddenly the gap between two groves became larger and larger. No one in the production line is able to fix the problem while the machine is running. Their only solution is to stop the machine for couple of hours and run it again. Manager disagreed because he has to deliver the orders by today afternoon. Problem needs to be fixed while machine is running within an hour. Their motor controller is running using MATLAB Simulink provided by the manufacturer of the machine." Now they want you to volunteer (in company volunteer means order) to solve the problem, because in your Resume it was written and you know Matlab. You jumped in the problem and start seeing the Matlab code. From the past history and from the code you have found the following information: Motor has a temperature senor which can record temperature every 2 sec and output to a *.xls file Whenever the temperature of the motor goes beyond 150 deg. F, precision of the grove cutter is lost. There is a coolant which supposed to cool the motor by regulating the coolant flow. Surprisingly you have found that logic to cool the motor (or control the coolant flow) is not correct. You are certain that if you are able to keep the motor below 150 deg. F, you can regain the precision You reported the problem to the manager. He asked you to solve it. Now what will be your course of actions using MATLAB. (Hint: you can use Curve Fitting, Lagrange polynomial, Numerical Integration and solution of first order ODE).Explanation / Answer
