Question

You have the option of either walking (***) or driving (>>>) from your hotel m Manhattan to the Met. Plot (******) the shortest walking route along the streets, ignoring one-way signs Plot (>>>>) the shortest driving route along the streets, obeying one-way signs You can drive 5 mph and walk 3 mph What is the fastest choice? Show your work (including units of measurement and calculations) for full credit: Equations that you could use: Velocity = Input Data: Walk Distance = ___mi Drive Distance = ___mi Walk Velocity = ___mi/hr Drive Velocity = mi/hr Calculate the answers In the space below (include units of measurement for FULL CREDIT!) Walk Time = ___ minutes Drive Time = ___ minutes

Explanation / Answer

Option 1 : Walking

Distance = 2 miles ,

Velocity/Speed = Distance/time = 3 mph,

time = 2/3 = 40 minutes

Plot the route : just southward direction cross 2 boxes/miles

Option 2: Car

Distance = 6 miles ( 3 sides of a square for round turn, 2 miles south and 1 mile left)

time taken = 6/5 =1.2 hours = 72 mins

Plot : 1. take the north direction (1miles)

2. take east or west ( 1 mile)

3. take south 3 miles (1 mile)

4. take west or east ( 1 miles)

c) So its faster to walk and go in 40 mins rather than going by car in 72 mins
