Ecosystems are not random groupings of plants and animals The environment and the organisms living there change over very long periods of time. The species that make up an ecological community have adapted to the local environmental conditions and to life with each other. Over time, conditions change By what means adapt to their changing environment? What is the raw material for this change? In your discussion, use desert plants, such as cacti, as examples of how plants have adapted to a limited amount of available water.

Explanation / Answer

Adaptations are used among the different species to meat the same basic end purpose to equip plants and animals with same biological and inherited character and features which is require to survive in various environment such as desert, rain forests , tundra etc. Organism undergoes to small incremental changes over time that help organisms to suite for survival in different locations.

Cacti are the best example of survival in the desert environment which do not have leaves instead they have fine spine, this help in letting them loose less amount of water through their leaves, which enables them to perform photosynthesis in the dry season. They have have very shallow roots to soak up water from the ground and they have expandable stems to store water which they absorb from the ground, due to these adaptations they are able to survive in the desert where as other plant will die.
