Question
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
The film BARAKA we watched is described as non-verbal spiritual meditation on the relationship between humans and nature. The film consists of three segments representing the following themes: the beauty of the natural world and the spiritual world, the negative impacts of humans/technology on the natural and spiritual worlds and the reconnection between humans and nature via spirituality/religion. From this perspective, spirituality is at the center of the relationship between humans and nature and its also the means by which humans connect or reconnect with nature.
My text book presents a different perspective. According to the text, technology is the means by which humans adapt to, interact with and make sense out of nature. Technology is what allows us as humans to live fully within an otherwise powerful and somewhat uncontrollable natural world. From this perspective, technology, rather than spirituality, is at the center of the relationship between humans and nature and the means by which humans connect or reconnect with nature.
How do you perceive, based on your personal experience, the relationship between humans, technology, nature, and religion/spirituality? Do you agree with the perspective of the film? With the text? A combination of the two? Neither?
Be specific in your argument and use examples from the film, text, and your experience to support your argument.
Explanation / Answer
The technology no doubts help us to resolve various mysteries of the nature and also makes our life comfortable. But technology has also isolate us from the nature. We are living in a busy schedule. We don't have time to observe the nature like sunrise sunset. We don't have to introspect in this way we are isolating from spirituality. Because of the technologies we are forgetting our natural abilities before that we were doing it all by overselves. We are so much dependent on our day to day lives in technology. We are so much obsessed in ourselves that we have no time for our family and friends. Now people are more engrossed in the virtual world rather than the real world because of social networking sites, so they cannot express their feelings and feels frustrated which leads to depression in them and sometimes this depression can lead to suicidal tendency seen especially among teenagers.
In the movie we have seen the flood of vehicles on the road so we cannot imagine how much they can cause harm to the environment by polluting it. Also we seen in the movie that workers were doing their job continuously without relaxing with the help of technologies which can be harmful to their health and also deprived them of their creativity since they are fully dependent on the technologies. We think that we can control the nature through the technologies but it is not possible. Though we can only predict the nature but the damages cannot be controlled by us no matter how much advance we are. This can be seen in various calamities occurring in nature like earthquake, landslides, volcano eruption etc. Thus I agree with the movie perspective that spirituality is at the center of relationship between humans and nature and also by which humans connect or reconnect with nature.
