Question
Consider the following 230 kV overhead-line/cable/overhead-line circuit. Consider
that there is a 100 kV square wave traveling down A towards B in the forward
traveling direction, which is initiated at the beginning of A.
a) What are the reflection and refraction/transmitted coefficients of a wave
traveling in the direction from A to B at the Junction AB?
b) What are the reflection and refraction/transmitted coefficients of a wave
traveling in the direction from B to C at the Junction BC?
c) What are the travel times for Line A, Cable B, Line C?
d) What is the peak of the first voltage wave just after it hits the termination of
Line C (open circuit)?
Explanation / Answer
travel times are just length/velocity
so for line A travel time = 50/(300*106) = 166 nanoseconds
so for line A travel time = 25/(150*106) = 166 nanoseconds
so for line A travel time = 50/(300*106) = 166 nanoseconds
peak of the first voltage wave will be = 100*tA*tB*tC = 100*0.4*(12/7)*2 =137.142KV
