Question

You have just been hired by Comcast for a summer internship and given the job of testing some of their transmission lines. You will be testing a 1 km section of 75ohm line which is terminated with a matched load. The cable has a phase velocity of 2 x 10^8 m/sec. You use a signal generator to put a step voltage on the line. You observe the following voltage waveform on your oscilloscope. You can assume that t=0 corresponds to the beginning of the voltage step. The question is, what is wrong with the line and where is it?

Explanation / Answer

There is a short circuit

it took 4micro second for wave to travel to the faulty point

velocity = 2 * 10^8

distance travelled = 800metres

so there is a short circuit at a distance of 800m from starting point
