Question
An emergency situation developed as a result of the failure of the cooling system of a portable electronic device used in a helicopter. The device dissipates 102 watts and is mounted on a 3 cm x 3 cm copper plate which is 0.65 cm thick. This device is turned on only when the helicopter exceeds 70 mph. Reliability consideration requires that the temperature of the mounting surface does not exceed 92 C. Design a cooling system for this device as an emergency measure keeping in mind that no fans or circulating pumps are available. One engineer suggested taking advantage of a small 0.5 cm thick window to provide thermal communication with the ambient air.Explanation / Answer
Hello! I am no expert in mechanical engineering, but I do have an idea. The small window could be used as a cooling system. You could put a hollow tube up to the window, and open it. You can then put a device on the open window that covers the window. Then there could be sensors connected to the device so when ever the temperature exceeds 92 C, the device will remove the blocking object and the air will go through the tube and will blow on the surface, cooling it. I am not sure if that would affect the helicopter. I hope my idea is somewhat useful for you! :)
