XIV. Essay Question – Answer in 2-3 Paragraphs, 4 sentences Each
The philosopher George Berkeley stated:
“It is indeed an opinion strangely prevailing amongst men, that houses, mountains, rivers, and in a word all sensible objects, have an existence, natural or real, distinct from their being perceived by the understanding [our minds].”
In essence, Berkeley did not believe that an external world of matter or objects existed outside of our minds. Our minds create reality for Berkeley.
On the contrary, much modern philosophy and science teaches that matter, and the world of objects exists outside of our minds. John Locke argued for this perspective.
Create an argument using the critical thinking tools you have acquired in this class to critique and analyze these two perspectives, and derive a plausible solution to these opposing perspectives. Refer back to these questions as you write: Can we understand ‘absolute reality’ using our own minds? Does something such as a ‘material’ or ‘external world’ really exist? Is an ‘external world’ present only because we perceive it?
Explanation / Answer
answer- according to John Locke we only percieve ideas and our external world is based on reflecting ideas on the mind of any person and it do not based on reasoning or influence. and these ideas are achieved through sensonry experience. so the our knowledge of external world is clearly a matter of know the object or external world to know the things in our mind.External world is the real existance of knowledge and it is not our imagination. So the houses, mountain and trees these all are sensible object. Locke also said that there is equal possiblity in out my mind and body are made of similar substance.
Berkely criticised the Lockes view that we can determine the existance of the external world. he stated the motions, figure and extension are just only ideas that are existing in our mind and they are nothing more than an idea.and he also stated that we can not concieve things from space without having any position and velocity.he believed that these physical thing are do not exist in the world.
