Question

Q1:

Discuss how relative motion is a critical issue in the midair refueling of aircraft. Would control of this process be with the pilot of the tanker or the aircraft being refueled?

A baseball is hit from home plate and travels over the center field fence. What would the trajectory of the baseball look like if air-resistance was not factored in? Does the stitching on a ball have any influence on the trajectory? If yes, what might it be?

Q2:

Discuss how relative motion is a critical issue in the midair refueling of aircraft. Would control of this process be with the pilot of the tanker or the aircraft being refueled?

Q3:
A jet on an aircraft carrier is launched by a catapult.  What are some of the parameters that would be taken into account to make sure the aircraft achives a specified speed at the end of the ship?  Consider some interesting alternatives to a catapult.

Q4: A projectile is fired into a block of wood that is hanging on the end of a light rigid rod.  How you would estimate the speed of the projectile?  What might account for the errors in your estimation?

Explanation / Answer

Q1. The trajectory of the basebal will be parabola.

Q3. The parameters are the velocity with which the jet is launched, the angle at which the jet is launched and the original speed of the aircraft. Other alternatives might be to have a small runway on the aircraft or just drop the jet from the aircraft.

Q4. The projectile has some kinetic energy and that kinetic energy shall be used to increase the potential energy of the block of wood by causing it to rise a bit. The errors might occur because some of the kinetic enrgy of the projectile might be wasted in piercing the wood or air resistance
