Question
1)You would like to select a material for the electrical contacts in an electrical switching device that opens and closes frequently and forcefully. What properties should the contact material possess? What types of materials might you recommend? Would Al2O3 be a good choice? Explain.
2) You would like to be able to physically separate different materials in a scrap recycling plant. Describe some possible methods that might be used to separate materials such as polymers, aluminum alloys, and steels from one another.
Explanation / Answer
Contact material should be stable under sparking conditions. Moreover it should bear high temperature without wear. It should posses greater strength even at high temperature to avoid breakage. It should be better conductor of electrical. Al2O3 will not be a good choice since it is soft malleable material and can be bended easily at higher temperature. For this purpose, copper would do best work in place of aluminium oxide.
2) Each material have different composition and different melting points. Materials can be seperated on basis of their melting points. Materials can be seperated by heating them, until lower melting elements get melted and seperated from other.
