Question
You have been assigned to conduct a site assessment for a lake in Montana. There is a new biofuels plant operating and discharging into the stream that feeds the lake and provides water for agricultural production of cattle and switchgrass. You observed high levels of algae floating on the surface of the lake, and the water was highly turbid. You also measured the DO at 1 m to be 5 mg/L,and at a depth of 20 m the DO was 1.0 mg/L.
a. How would you describe the productivity level of the lake? Explain your reasoning.
b. Similar lakes have had threatened Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout populations. But this lake does not. What changes would you suggest be made in managing the lake’s water quality prior to reintroducing trout to the lake?
Explanation / Answer
First we understand the meaning of of Productivity level of lake - its the ability tohold or support the marine life ie animal life & plant life its also called its TROPIC state.these lakes are mainly classified into three categories 1) OLIGOTROPHIC LAKES These type of lakes are deep -bottom & mostly water is observed clear, with low growth of aquatic plants, but sufficent amount of oxygen is available even in summer . Cold water fishes like white fish & trout are found. are found 2) MESOTROPHIC LAKES : these are the lakes with medium / intermediate levels the water available is clear & the beds are sumerged with aquatic plants , the soils also have moderate nurrients. 3) EUTROPHIC LAKES. : these type of lakes are are of high productivity levels & these lakes are shallow & water vailable is generally turbid , but thickly / abundant growth of aquatic plants take place these type of lakes have
generally have NO dissolved oxygen. Only warm water fishes are available mostly ,fishes like bass &pike, aare commonly.
B) The Montana lake is the natural treasure,& a big water resource. The water is managed by the system federal, state,& local authorties ( communities& socities) The federal introduced were CLEAN WATER ACT to protect from chemical, biological, physical aspects . to control the floods ie (FCA) NEED for impact of floods. The endangered species acT (ESA ) To protect & restore the marine spices & the ecosystem.this programme also for the conseravation of threatned & endangered animals & plant species A MONTANA WATER ACT IN 1973 was introduced to maintain minimum instream flow for water quality for fishes&plants
