Question

a garden hose attached with a nozzle is used to fill a 20-gal bucket. The inner diameter of the hose is 0.875 inch and it reduces to 0.625 inch at the nozzle exit. If the average velocity in the hose is 7.3 ft/s, determine
a) the volume and mass flow rates of water through the hose
b) how long it will take to fill the bucket with water
c) the average velocity at the nozzle exit

a) the volume and mass flow rates of water through the hose
b) how long it will take to fill the bucket with water
c) the average velocity at the nozzle exit

Explanation / Answer

a) Volume flow rate in hose = A_h*U_h

= pi/4 * (0.875/12)^2 * 7.3 = 0.03 ft^3/s

mass flow rate = density * vol. flow rate = 62.4*0.03 = 1.9 lb/s

b) time taken = 20*0.13368 ft^3 / 0.03 ft^3/s = 89.12 seconds

c) same volume flow rate

0.03 = pi/4 * 0.625/12 ^2 * V_n

V_n = 14.08 ft/s
