Question
Two previously undeformed specimens with square cross-sections are to be strengthened by reducing their cross sections. The first specimen is initially 25mm on each side and after deformation is 35mm by 12mm. A second specimen is 20mm on each side. The specimens are the same material and have the same properties prior to deformation. If the properties of the specimens are to remain equal, what must the dimensions of the second specimen be following deformation? (Assume the second specimen remain a square cross-section)
Explanation / Answer
(F/A1)*delta(L)/L = (F/A2)*delta(L')/L'
delta(L') = (A2/A1)*(L'/L)*delta(L)
delta(L') = 6.656 mm
Final length of 1 side = 20 - 6.656 = 13.344 mm
