Question

An orbiting satellite has a mass of 4700kg and is traveling at a constant velocity of V0. To alter its orbit, an attached rocket discharges 140kg of gases from the reaction of solid fuel at a speed of 4000m/s relative to the satellite in a direction opposite V0. The fuel discharge rate is constant for 3s.

(a) Determine the thrust exerted on the satellite.

(b) Determine the acceleration of the satellite during this 3#8208s period

(c) Determine the change of velocity of the satellite during this time period.

Explanation / Answer

(a) Thrust = 140 X 4000 / 3 = 186666.67 N

(b) = Acceleration = Force / mass = 186666.67 / 4700 = 39.72 m/s2

(c) Change in velocity = 39.72 X 3 = 119.15
