Question

So I was wondering how I could find my maximum normal stress and shear stresses in a bolt that is in double shear. I will just describe the dimensions. The front view is just a block with a bolt in the middle at the centroid. For the block the length is 4in and the height is 3.5 in. the diameter of the circle in the middle is 0.5 in. There is a vertical force of 10587lb acting on the bottom middle of the block. When looking at the side view, it is a thin walled member. Basically, the thickness of the thin wall is 0.25 in while the length of the side view is 2.5 in. Will the thin wall matter when solving for my stresses?

Explanation / Answer

(pi/4)d^2

10587 / ((pi/4)0.5^2)

= 53919 lb/in^2

A= pi*d*t

10587 / (pi*0.5*0.25)

= 26959 lb/in^2
