Question
You have two metal specimen both of which are cylindrical with a diameter of 20 mm and a length of 200 mm. One is made of titanium alloy with Young's modulus 100 GPa and the other out of stainless steel Young's modulus 200 GPa. Both are subjected to a tensile force of 500 N. Which will have the higher stress and what are the stresses? Which will develop the higher strain and what are the strains ( assuming deformations are within linear elastic range)? Given this information can you tell which material will be stronger?
Explanation / Answer
stress= F/A =500/(pi*D^2/4)
So stress is same in both cases
= 1592356.89 N/m^2 (ans)
And strain =stress/E
So stainless steel having higher E will have lesser strain
And lesse strain means it is more strong than titanium alloy (ans)
strain in titanium =1592356.89 N/m^2 /100 GPa =1.59*10^-5 (ans)
strain in stainless steel = 1592356.89 N/m^2 /200 GPa =7.95*10^-6 (ans)
