Question
Human-induced climate change remains a controversial topic with a lot of misinformation on both sides of the political spectrum. Discuss the following aspects of some of the more common claims about global warming. A very good website that discusses some of these topics is the Skeptical Science website.
- The sun is causing most of the warming of the Earth.
- Scientists don’t really agree on global warming.
- It hasn’t warmed since 1998 and therefore global warming really isn’t happening
- Antarctica is actually gaining ice.
- We have had some very severe winters recently, evidence the Earth is not warming.
- Cities have grown in size and cities are generally warmer than the surroundings creating a false temperature reading.
- The temperature record is unreliable and therefore we really don’t know what’s going on.
Write a short essay or paragraph of at least 300 words.
Explanation / Answer
Global Warming recently is a very controversial topic as there arises questions on whether it is true or is a myth. Next controversial topic is if it is happening also, is there any human involvement .This topic has remained controversial because it is very hard to see and record the changes going on over whole world. Scientists and Researchers uses different methodologies to interpret the recorded results. It is also generally heard that due to political clashes unfair means of data manupulation are being done which makes it more hard to come to a simple conclusion. It is now accepted by mostly that the global warming is for real and the myth that this is a political hoax is now gone. Nearly 90% of the researchers and scientists are agreeing on the fact that Humans are causing this. researchers from several counties actively publishing papers on Global warming and suggesting it is due to human activites. They are the experts who keeps their views through researches in front of Public and so people believing on the consensus. The Sun is generally blamed to cause the global warming as it has been proposed by some scientists that increased activity of Sun spot at solar surface is the reason for increasing the temperature of the earth. But if the records are seen ,they show a cooling trend for the sun which is just opposite to the trend of increasing earth temperature. The temperature of earth increases because the earth's atmosphere and hydrosphere is capturing the heat and increased the temperature by nearly 0.8 degree celcius. Several activitites are being seen which opposes the global warming concept such as Antarctica is gaining ice , we have some severe winter recently but actually the whole concept is not put forward. In Antarctica the suface ice is decreasing which have been formed by deposition of ice during snowfalls and melting of this ice adds to the ocean water increasing sea level and the sea ice is increasing which melts during the spring and again generates during winter. And as the case of severe winters, the arctic sea is getting hotter and the above polar atmosphere is cold, the hotter water moves upward generating high pressure and due to which a clockwise swirl forms which moves the polar wind towards the europe and other parts of the globe causing severe winters. Some researchers put forward results that earth hasn't warmed since the 1998 but they show the satellite results which measure the atmospheric temperature but the heat is generally absorbed in the oceans and they show the actual change. It is also argued by some experts that the temperature in cities are higher exaggerating the overall temperature but scientist have been very careful during measuring the temperatures and showed that the warming is same in rural areas also with vey few difference in temperature from Urban areas because in urban areas increased human activities increases the temperature known as Urban Heat Island Effect(UHI) but scientists has considered this UHI factor and then shown that the temperature rise is all over the world.
