Question

You are ready to design your playground on the lot. There are young children in the neighborhood, so you want to include a sandbox. You can use 1/4 of the length and 1/4 of the width of the original size of the lot selected in part 2a. (20 ft by 70 ft=1400 ft squared)

a. what is the maximum length and width of the sandbox?

b. assume that the height of the sandbox is 1.5 feet high, and use the length and width calculated in part a. what is the volume of the sandbox?

c.A fifty pound bag of play sand will fill approximately 1/2 of a cubic foot and costs $4. If you wish to fill the sandbox 3/4 high, how many bags of sand will you need to purchase/how much will it cost? (you must purchase whole bags of sand)

Explanation / Answer

A. Length and width is 1/4 of original lot

So, length = 70/4 = 17.5 ft

Width =20/4 = 5 ft

B. Volume of sand box= l×b×h =5 ×17.5× 1.5 = 131.25 ft cube

C. We have to fill 3/4 of sand box. So, sand requiered is

= 131.25 × 3/4 = 98.4375 ft cube

50 pound bag will fill 1/2 ft cube so for filling 98.4375 ft cube it will require 98.4375 × 2= 196.875 bags

So, 197 bags reqyireq to fill 3/4 sandbox.

Cost for it is = 197 × 4 = $ 788
