Question
Determine whether either of the following populations are in the H-W equation:
Population 1: A rare recessive mutation called delta 32 resltus in a resistance to HIV infection when homozygous. 60% dominant; 35.1% heterozygous and 4.9% homozygous recessive.
Population 2: The allele for sickle cell anemia confers resistance to malaria on heterozygous individuals. 75% homozygous dominant; 24.2% heterozygous and 0.2% homozygous recessive.
If either population is NOT in equilibrium, speculate about why that is the case.
Explanation / Answer
Population 1) p2 =0.6 and q2 = 0.049. so p= 0.77 and q= 0.22. p+q~1
Population 2)p2 = 0.75 and q2=0.002. So p = 0.866 and q=0.044. hence p+q is not equal to 1. It's 0.9. this us so cause the mutation instills a selective pressure on a subset of population which over time shall overrule random mating. Hence the equilibrium is disturbed.
