Question

Suppose the arrival rate in each of the following scenarios was 9 parts per hour. Calculate the utilization of each station in the line, and identify the bottleneck.

a) A four-station line with single-machine stations, where the average processing times are 15, 20, 10, and 12 minutes, respectively for stations 1, 2, 3, and 4.

b) A four-station line with single-machine stations, where the average processing times are 20, 20, 20, and 20 minutes, respectively for stations 1, 2, 3, and 4.

c) A four-station line with multi machine stations, where the number of (parallel) machines at stations 1, 2, 3, and 4 is 2, 6, 10, and 3, respectively. The average processing times at stations 1, 2, 3, and 4 are 10, 24, 40, and 18 minutes, respectively.

d) Same as scenario (c) except that 30% of station 2 goes to waste.

e) Same as scnario (d) except that station 3 has a 30% rework rate that occurs once for each part.

Explanation / Answer

a) Capacity = 60 / processing time, Utilisation = Capacity of bottleneck / capacity of station .

Bottleneck is station 2 (having 100% utilization)

b) All stations have 100% utilization, so all of them are bottleneck

c) in this case, capacity = 60 / processing time * number of parallel machines at station

d) Multiply the capacity calculated in (3) by 70% (=1-30%)

e) with 30% rework rate, the processing time of station 3 will effectively increase by 30%. so multiply the processing time of station 3 by 1.3 (=1 + 30%)

Station Processing time (minutes) Capacity (parts/hour) Utilization 1 15 4 75% 2 20 3 100% 3 10 6 50% 4 12 5 60%
