HELP PLEASE!!!! I'M SO CONFUSED
Scientists are seeking a new drug that will inhibit the PrfA protein of Listeria
monocytogene’s ability to bind DNA. The drug candidate is called Purficillin/
They obtain the following data
10 mice infected with: Number dead after 48 hours
10^6 Wild type L. monocytogenes 10/10
10^5 Wild type L. monocytogenes 6/10
10^4 Wild type L. monocytogenes 4/10
10^3 Wild type L. monocytogenes 0/10
10^2 Wild type L. monocytogenes 0/10
10^5 Wild type L. monocytogenes + Purficillin 1/10
A. Estimate the LD50 of wild-type L. monocytogenes and why?
B. Does Purficillin work? Explain how you reached that conclusion.
Explanation / Answer
A. LD50 means lethal dose 50%. That means the dose of the substance which kills 50% of the samples tested. Here, they have used 10 mice. So the dose which kills minimum 5 mice is LD50. Hence we can considere 10^5 as LD50.
B. Its looks like the drug candiadate Purficillin worked in the above Scenario. When you give Purficillin for 10^5 (LD50) L.monocytogenes, only 1 mouse is dead instead of 6 mice.
