Can you answer this question?
A provider order states, “Meperidine (Demerol®) 45 mg, Atropine Sulfate (Atropine®) 0.3 mg IM now.” The meperidine (Demerol®) comes in a pre-filled syringe containing 50 mg/mL, and the atropine sulfate (Atropine®) comes in a vial containing 400 mcg/mL. What is the total volume that the nurse will be injecting?
- Which is the smallest?

Explanation / Answer
Before answering this question, let me tell you that I am not answering the second question i.e. "- Which is the smallest?" as I am not able to decipher the meaning of this standalone statement
Now coming to the question
First of all, know this. Density = Mass/Volume. Deriving from this: Volume = Mass/Density
The standard unit of measurement of Mass is "kilograms" and that of density is "kilograms per cubic meter". Hence the standard unit of Volume is Cubic Meter.
As per above question and above statements: 50 mg/ml = 50 kg/m3.
Therefore applying the same formula in above question
1. Volume of Meperidine = 45/50 = 0.9 ml
2. Volume of Atropine = 0.75 ml
Total Volume = 1.65 ml
