The article presents a grave situation about how different chemicals that we are exposed to daily and even right around birth, might lead to some serious damage to our lives which we are completely not in control of. These chemicals are known to make epigenetic changes on our genome which can turn unwanted genes 'ON' or at wrong times. These can also turn genes 'OFF' when a function is actually required. However, since the field is new and not many techniques have been developed to actually look for these changes, it becomes extremely difficult to study these changes in a real life scenario. The good side of such changes is that not all changes are irreversible. Another thing is that there are good changes too. However, as mentioned above, because of the difficulty in studying these changes it becomes extremely challenging task to actually undertake such studies without criticism.
My take on the subject is that research in the field is going to be full of surprises and hence should be pursued even on the face of difficulties. I understand that it is extremely difficult to study the effect of one single chemical on human genome and then relate it to the function. However, there might be some interesting studies like the one where researchers could pin point that licking behaviour by mom on pups actually made them less stressed in life when they actually grew up. Such a study might have broad implications even on human life where we can think to improve the conditions of human behaviour just because we can alter their epigenome using specific chemicals and maybe protect them from stress. Such a thing might be possible for many of neurological disorders as well as other diseases. Thus, even though daunting and expensive in the beginning, it will have long term benefits in the future with direct implications in human lives.
