Hospital A, B, C, and D all use the same patient classification system. The percent of patents for each classification by hospital is listed in the table as below. Use the information to calculate case mix index for each hospital. Discuss why you need to calculate the case-mix index. In other words, what is the purpose of knowing case-mix index?

Total direct care hours = 30

Average (direct care hours), A = 30/4

Now we calculate the weight of every care unit:

Weight of Low level care = (Direct care hours for low level care) / A = 3*4/30 = 0.4

Weight of Medium level care = (Direct care hours for medium level care) / A = 6*4/30 = 0.8

Weight of High level care = (Direct care hours for high level care) / A = 9*4/30 = 1.2

Weight of Extreme care = (Direct care hours for extreme care) / A = 12*4/30 = 1.6

Case Mix Index is given by CMI = (Patients at a particular care level in a hospital)*(Its weight)

**CMI of Hospital D is highest

Case Mix Index value is used in deciding what type of resources we need to care for the treatment of the patient in th Diagnosis-related group. It helps in classifying the patients in the groups having same conditions which are based on diagnosis (main and secondary), age of the patients, comorbidity and needs. Therefore it is necessary to calculate CMI value.
