Question
Using the SPSS Output from Case Exhibit 22.1-1 on page 551 of your textbook, comment on the appropriateness of the statistical test used (make sure that your response includes information on the types of variables used and the scales of measurement). Describe an alternative approach that may be used. (Texbook

Explanation / Answer
The analysis is appropriate. The test that has been performed here is a "cross-tabulation", which is another way of saying "test of independence". The test is attempting to determine whether the variables "gender" and "oldskool" are independent of each other. The result of the chi-square test is 6.557 and p-value is 0.038 show that the variable are dependent that is we reject the null hypothesis, there is a relation between a oldskool score and their gender.
The gender variable is a categorical variable, it is coded as a numerical value. The "oldskool" variable is a numerical variable, which could be on the interval or ratio scale, depending on how the score is computed from the survey questions. The measurement level of the variables does not matter though, because for the purposes of the Chi-square test being performed, only the frequencies for each cell of the contingency table are relevant.
An alternative method of analysis for this data is the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test. In this test the "oldskool" data for both genders would be combined, and then ranked, keeping track of which gender each data point is associated with. The ranks for the values belonging to smaller sample size are then summed. A z-value is then computed and compared against a critical value for the desired level of significance, following the usual hypothesis testing pattern.
The Chi-square test is computationally easier to perform, so my preference would be to use that test for this situation.
