Question

Complete the sentences describing membrane lipids by moving the names of the lipids to the appropriate targets. Some lipids will be used more than once. Some targets require you to place two or three lipids Sphingolipidscontain one fatty acid. Sulfolipids Archaeal lipids Sphingolipids Glycerophospholipids Galactolipids Galactolipids include two fatty acids joined to glycerol by ester linkages. Sulfolipids Glycerophospholipids are made up of a 1,2-diacylglycerol and a polar head group alcohol attached by a phosphodiester bond Galactolipids Sulfolipids are common in plant membranes Sulfolipids contain sulfate Glycerophospholipids have hydrocarbons linked to glycerol by bonds that are more stable in acidic or high temperature environments. Sphingolipids do not contain glycerol. Sphingolipids Glycerophospholipids can contain phosphate Sulfolipids

Explanation / Answer

1. Sphingolipid contains one fatty acid that linked by the amide linkage to the C-2 carbon fo backbone.

2. Galactolipid, Glycerophospholipid, sulfolipid includes two fatty acids joined to glycerol by ester linkages.

3. Glycerophospholipids has three main parts. It has three carbon backbone of glycerol having hydroxy (alcohol) polar head out of which two are attached by phosphodiestr bond to the fatty acids and remaing one is attached to the phosphate group.

4. Galactolipids and sulfolipids are present in pasma membrane. Galactolipis is also known as plant lipid. It plays very important role in photosynthesis in light harvesting complex so, it is more abundant in photosynthetic ,membrane of the plants.

5. Sulfolipids contains sulfates as functional group.

6.Glycerophospholipids have hydrocarbons linked to glycerol by bonds that are more stable in acidic or high temperature environments

7.Sphingolipids do not contains the glycerol. their fatty acids are attached by the amide linkage to sphingoside base.

5. Sphingolipids, glycerophospholipids, and sulfolipids can contain phosphate
