Question

Consider the ofllowing results presented in a journal (.units et al, computers in Human Behavior, 2014, Vol. 39, pp. 387-392.) This paper is posted in Pilot, in case you desire to examine it yourself. Assume a 5% significance whenever needed. This study examines non-verbal cue recognition using a test. Their study consisted of two groups: a (1) a camp group (Ncamp=51); and (2) a control group (Ncontrol = 54). Table I reports the ethnic composition of both groups. Uhls et al. used a t-test (assumed to paired or pooled) to determine the groups were different "(t(105) = -2.95, P

Explanation / Answer

As the two gruops are different(Camp and control groups) paired t test is not an appropriate method to appy. Also there is no mention of the normality. One of the assumptions of t tst is the data should follow normal distribution.

We should check initially that the data is following normal distribution using any of the methods. Then only can proceed for the t test. Here independant t test is an appropriate method rather than paired t test.

As the data was not following normal distribution, I have applied non parametric test(Man whitney U test).`

p value=0.69, at 5% level of significance, there is no significance between camp and control groups.
