Question

Formulate a system of equations for the situation below and solve. Cantwell Associates, a real estate developer, is planning to burn a new apartment complex consisting of one-bedroom units and two- and three-bedroom townhouses. A total of 216 units IS planned, and the number of family units (two- and three-bedroom townhouses) will equal the number of one-bedroom units If the number of one-bedroom units will be 3 times the number of three-bedroom units, find how many units each type will be in the complex

Explanation / Answer

x= number of one bed room units

y= number of two bed room units

z= number of three bed room units

x+y+z=216-------1

x=y+z--------2

x=3z -------3

from 2 and 3, 3z=x+y , y=2z

substitute this in 1, 3z+2z+z=216, 6z=216

z=36

y=72

x=108

Answer

number of one bed room units =108

number of two bed room units = 72

number of three bed room units=36
