Explanation / Answer

Answer:A – Egg, larval, pupal, adult

The time required for an egg to mature into an adult varies depending upon the temperature. At room temperature, it requires around 7-9 days, however, at higher temperature due to heat stress the developmental time is more. A female usually lays around 350-400 eggs, which under favorable condition will hatch into larvae. There are 3 stages (1st , 2nd, and 3rd, instar larva) of larval development and it takes around 4 days. This is the time when they feed on the microorganism on the substrate that they are growing on. After day 4, the larvae will pupate. At this stage wings and legs develop. This is called metamorphosis, which last for 4 days and finally the adult fly emerges.

2.Which of the following is the feature of larval stage

Answer:A – Use black mouth hook to eat

Ventral surface of larva has rows of hook that helps them to grip a substrate and feed

3.Which of the following are the reasons for using drosophila in experiments

Answer:D -all of the above

It has a short and simple life cycle of about 14 days and thus helps in studying many generation in short period of time. Their maintenance in lab is not very expensive. Its genome is completely sequenced.

4.Drosophila melanogaster is used to study the following biological precess

Answer: A – Embryonic development

Drosophila’s embryo is similar to that of human to certain extent and it is easy to control the gene expression at embryonic stage, which helps in studying various gene

5. Alternating dark and light bands can be seen on the entire rear portion of

Answer:C – Female Drosophila melanogaster
