Lets list all the prime numbers less than 100:

From this list, we see that:

?(1) = 0 since there are no primes less than or equal to 1.

?(2) = 1 since there is one prime less than or equal to 2.

?(10) = 4 since there are four primes less than or equal to 10.

?(100) = 25 since there are twenty five primes less than or equal to 100.

In fact, one can verify that these are equalities are also true:

Explanation / Answer

To prove whether a number is a prime number, first try dividing it by 2, and see if you get a whole number. If you do, it can't be a prime number. If you don't get a whole number, next try dividing it by prime numbers: 3, 5, 7, 11 (9 is divisible by 3) and so on, always dividing by a prime number (see table below).
