Question

Sophia and Emily are twin sisters and best friends. They are saving up for concert and agreed to pay for the tickets together when they have enough money. They both created expressions to see how fast they were making money and came up with the following expressions. Sophia: 35w + 55 - 10w & Emily: -28w + 75 - 5w + 12, where w is the number of weeks they have been saving. Combine their expressions to see how much they were making together. Using the expression above to see if they will more than $390 in four weeks. If not, how much will they be short?

Explanation / Answer

Sophia 's saving in w weeks =35w +55-10w

= 35w -10w +55

=25w +55

Emily's saving in w weeks =-28w+75-5w+12

=-28w -5w+75+12

=-33w +87

a) Combing expression will be

=(25w +55) +(-33w +87)

=25 w -33w +87+55

=-8w +142

After combining expression both will be saving as expression

=142-8w

b) In four weeks savings will be

Putting w=4

=142-8*4

=142-32

=110$

They will be short by 280$
