Question

Using an E-test, the MIC for an isolate from a patient suffering from a tooth abscess was reported as seen above. If the concentration of antibiotic at the site of the abscess is 20 micrograms/ml, what effect will this concentration of antibiotic have on the organisms at the site of the abscess? ??? - 128 96 64 48 32 24 16 12 8 6 4 3 The organism will be unaffected by that concentration of antibiotic. The organism will be inhibited by that concentration of antibiotic. The organism will be killed by that concentration of antibiotic. The antibiotic will inhibit half of the organisms.

Explanation / Answer

E-test is a very popular, easy, fast and time saving method to detect the microorganisms susceptiblility towards antibiotics. It is a laboratory test in which a strip containing antibiotic on it ( defined concentration) is there. we put this strip on the agar plates streaked with a particular dilution of specific microorganism. After incubation, only those plates showing clear results will be used.

Test interpretation - A zone showing no growth around strap - means positive result.

No zone means that microorganism is unaffected by that antibiotic.

Positive result - a big clear zone means microbes are susceptible to small concentration of antibiotic.

A small clear zone means microbes are less susceptible to that antibiotic.

There is scale to determine that which antibiotic concentration will be helpful to inhibit the growth of that microorganism by a particular antibiotic already present on that strip.

In tooth abcess, mainly anaerobic bacteria is the major player.

Of which the Streptococcus is the predominant one. In the E test for this microbe the antibiotic at a concentration of 2omicrogram/ml. This concentration will inhibit those microbe at this particular concentration.
