Question

A student writes a(bc) = (ab)(ac) How do you respond? Which is a correct response? The student is correctly applying the associative property of multiplication. The student is applying the distributive property of multiplication over addition to multiplication. The student is incorrect in his/her extension of the distributive property The student is commutative property of multiplication the student applying the distributive property of multiplication over addition to multiplication. The student is correct in his/her extension of the distributive Property.

Explanation / Answer

a(bc) = (ab) (ac)
Here the student is applying the same property of multiplicaiton over addition which correctly is :
a(b+c) = ab + ac;

Although the sutdent is applying the wrong property since this is multiplicaito nover multiplicaiton and not multiplicaiton over addition, you can see from the distrbution spread of 'a' to 'b' and 'c' that the student is correct in his/her extention of the distributive property
