How to know what variable is independent and what variable is dependent and what should we put on the X axis and what should we put on the Y axis sometimes I get confused what is The dependent and what is the independent I don’t know what variable depends on the other How to know what variable is independent and what variable is dependent and what should we put on the X axis and what should we put on the Y axis sometimes I get confused what is The dependent and what is the independent I don’t know what variable depends on the other

Explanation / Answer

Independent variable is that variable which can have any value or you can say whose value does not depend on any other variable.

Say for example, y = 2x

here, x is independent variable as we can select any value of x irrespective of the value of y.

On the other hand, y is dependent variable, as its value will change when x will change.

Similarly in regression analysis, Y = B0 + B1X1 + B2X2....+ E

Here X1, X2 are independent variable and Y is dependent on X.

The normal convention is to put the independent variable on the X axis and thedependent variable on the Y axis.
