My Notes Ask Your Teacher According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "The snowy tree cricket (Oecanthus fultoni) is popularly known as the thermometer cricket because the approximate temperature (Fahrenheit) can be estimated by counting the number of chirps in 15 seconds and adding 40." (a) Express this statement as a formula giving the temperature T as a function of the number N of chirps per 15 seconds for the snowy tree cricket (b) Algebraically, transform the expression from part (a) into an equivalent one giving the temperature Tas a function of the number of chirps, R, per minute for the snowy tree cricket. Find the values for T (in oF) when R = 36, R = 48, and R = 100. when R- 36,T when R = 48T- when R = 100, T = (c) OF OF OF ,

Explanation / Answer

a) number of chirps per 15 seconds is N

and we add 40 to this N

So T=N+40

b)

1 minute --> R chirps

60 seconds ---> R chirps

1 second ---> R/60 chirps

15 seconds ---> (R/60)*15 chirps =15R/60 =R/4

but number of chirps per 15 seconds is N(according to part a)

Hence N= R/4

We replace N by R/4 in formula of part a

We get T=(R/4) +40

c)

When R=36, T=(36/4)+40

                              =9 +40

                              =49

When R=48 , T= (48/4) +40

                              =12 +40

                              =52

When R=100, T= (100/4) +40

                              =25 +40

                              =65

4)

a) we replace 64 by 73

so,formula is H = 73t -16t^2

b)

We replace 64 by v0

So,formula is H = v0t -16t2
