Question
There are different ways to predict how many games a baseball team will win. The most obvious is to look at scoring runs. To win a game, you have to score more runs than the other team. The other statistic is ERA, earned run average. This measures how many runs your pitchers allow the other team to score, on average, per game.
Parameter Estimate
Constant 105.70727
Runs. 0.069896411
ERA. -8.409312
Response Variable -Wins
Predictor Variables- Runs, ERA
R-squared- .824
Questions to be answered: 1. Write down the regression equation.
2. Interpret the value of R^2 in this equation.
3. Interpret the coefficient of Runs in this equation.
4. Explain why the coefficient of ERA is negative.
5. Compute the predicted number of Wins for a team with 700 Runs and ERA of 4.
Explanation / Answer
1)The regression equation.
Wins = 105.70 + 0.069*Runs - 8.40 *ERA
2) Interpret the value of R^2 in this equation
See the R-squared- .824
that means there is 82% variation explained by the responce varible(Wins) by the regressors (Run and ERA).
3. Interpret the coefficient of Runs in this equation.
for Runs. 0.069896411
If Runs increases by one unit then wins increases by 0.069 unit
for ERA
If ERA increases by one unit then wins decreases by 8.40 unit
4. Explain why the coefficient of ERA is negative.
because the correlation between Wins and ERA is negative
5. Compute the predicted number of Wins for a team with 700 Runs and ERA of 4.
Wins = 105.70 + 0.069*Runs - 8.40 *ERA
= 105.70 + 0.069*700- 8.40 *4
= 120.4
=120
