Question

Car Colors Choose a new car or light truck at random and note its color. Here are the probabilities of the most popular colors for vehicles sold globally in 2010: Color Probability 0.260.240.16 0.16 0.06 0.05 Silver BlackWhite Grey RedBlue Beige/Brown 0.03 a. What is the probability that the vehicle you choose has any other color than those listed? b. What is the probability that a randomly chosen vehicle is neither silver nor white? c. What is the probability that a randomly chosen vehicle is a primary color?

Explanation / Answer

Given that,

a) Here, Total probability of given colors is,

= 0.26 + 0.24 + 0.16 + 0.16 + 0.06 + 0.05 + 0.03

= 0.96

Therefore, the probability that the vehicle you choose has any other color than those listed = 1 - 0.96 = 0.04

b) P(Neither silver nor white) = 1 - [ P(silver) + P(white)]

= 1 - [ 0.26 + 0.16]

= 1 - 0.42

P( Neither silver nor white) = 0.58

Hence the probability that a randomly chosen vehicle is neither silver nor white is 0.58

c) We know there are three primary colors that are, Red, Yellow and Blue

But in above probability diatribution there is no yellow color so we take only Red and Blue color as a primary color in this case.

So, P(primary color ) = P(Red) + P(Bule) = 0.06 + 0.05

P(primary color) = 0.11

Hence, the probability that a randomly chosen vehicle is a primary color is 0.11

Color Silver Black White Grey Red Bule Beige/ Brown Probability 0.26 0.24 0.16 0.16 0.06 0.05 0.03
