Question
Suppose a clinical trial is conducted to test the efficacy of a drug A for treating gonorrhea in females to specifically see whether it has a significant different failure rate (p) than an existing drug (Drug B) which has a 25% failure rate. 100 female patients with gonorrhea are given Drug A and seen 2 weeks later. Use the normal theory method to answer the following questions.
Of the 100 females, 15 still had gonorrhea, the fail rate is 15%.
Which is the correct 95% CI for "100 females, 15 still had gonorrhea with fail rate of 15%" based on the normal theory method?
Explanation / Answer
The failure rate of the new drug A = 0.15
Here 95% CI for failure rate = p^ +- Z95% sqrt [p^ * (1-p^)/n]
= 0.15 +- 1.96 * sqrt [0.15 * 0.85/100]
= 0.15 +- 1.96 * 0.0357
= 0.15 +- 0.07
= (0.08, 0.22)
THe confidence doesn;t contain the value of 0.25 so we can say that drug A has significant different failure rate than existing drug which has 25% failure rate.
