Question

At General Hospital, nurses are given performance evaluations to determine eligibility for merit pay raises. The supervisor rates the nurses on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest rating) for several activities: promptness, record keeping, appearance, and bedside manner with patients. Then an average is determined by giving a weight of 2 for promptness, 4 for record keeping, 1 for appearance, and 3 for bedside manner with patients. What is the average rating for a nurse with ratings of 8 for promptness, 1 for record keeping, 5 for appearance, and 2 for bedside manner? (Enter your answer to one decimal place.)

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Given,

Highest rating for promptness in final rating = 2

Highest rating for record keeping in final rating = 4

Highest rating for appearance in final rating = 1

Highest rating for bedside manner with patients = 3

i.e

if a nurse gets 10 out of 10 in promptness she gets a weight of 2 in her final rating

Coefficient for promptness = 2/10 = 0.2

if a nurse gets 10 out of 10 in record keeping she gets a weight of 4 in her final rating

Coefficient for record keeping = 4 / 10 = 0.4

if a nurse gets 10 out of 10 in appearance she gets a weight of 1 in her final rating

Coefficient for appearance = 1 / 10 = 0.1

if a nurse gets 10 out of 10 in bedside manners she gets a weight of 3 in her final rating

Coefficient for bedside manners = 3 / 10 = 0.3

By multipying the coefficients to obtained Individual ratings we can get final ratings (indicidual ratings which should be added )

promptness = 8 * 0.2 = 1.6

record keeping = 1 * 0.4 = 0.4

appearance = 5 * 0.1 = 0.5

bedside manners = 2 * = 0.3

Average rating for the nurse with given ratings = 1.6 + 0.4 + 0.5 + 0.3

= 2.8
