Question
7. In an investigation of the flow and volume dependence of the total respiratory system in a group of mechanically ventilated patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Tantucci et al. collected the following baseline values on constant inspiratory flow (Us): 0.95, 0.97, 1.03, 1.10, 1.04, 0.98 and 1.05. Assume that the seven subjects constitute a simple random sample from a normally distributed population of similar subjects a. What is the point estimate of the population mean? (2 points) b. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the population mean constant inspiration flow. (2+2 points) c. State the practical interpretation of the confidence interval you constructed. (2 points) Construct 90% confidence interval for the population mean constant inspiration flow using STATA (2 points)Explanation / Answer
Given data on constant inspiration flow (L/s) is 0.95, 0.97, 1.03, 1.1, 1.04, 0.98, and 1.05. This data is assumed to be from Normal distribution. Then
(Sample mean – Z0.05*s/Sqrt(n), Sample mean – Z0.05*s/Sqrt(n))
(1.017143 - 0.930254 * 0.057057/Sqrt(7), 1.017143 + 0.930254 * 0.057057/Sqrt(7) )
(0.997081, 1.037204).
Hence it means that on an average 90% patients will show on constant inspiration flow (L/s) in the range (0.997081 , 1.037204).
Due symmetry of Normal distribution It also means 5% patients will show on constant inspiration flow (L/s) less than 0.997081 and 5% will show on constant inspiration flow (L/s) above 1.037204.
