Question

You believe that people in the United States spend about the same on clothing than people in five European countries do. To test your belief, you collect data on amount spent on clothing (in dollars) for over 300 individuals in all sik different countries (including the United States). Which of the following tests can you use? O At-test for the mean A z-test for population proportion O An F-test for difference in means O A paired sample t-test for difference in means O An independent samples t-test for difference in means (equal variances) O An F-test for difference in variances O A z-test for the difference in means O A z-test for the mean O A chi-squared test for variance O A z-test for difference in proportions O An independent samples t-test for difference in means (unequal variances)

Explanation / Answer

The only test we can use to test the hypothesis is the third one: An F-test for difference in means. An independent samples t-test for difference in means can also be used but as there are more than one country we are interested in we can not use this one directly as we need multiple comparison techniques like Bonferoni etc.
