Linear Correlation and Regression Student Learning Outcomes 1) The student will calculate and construct the line of best fit between two variables. 2) The student will evaluate the relationship between two variables to determine in that relationship is significant The Data Given national and international pressures along with speculative markets, gasoline prices are on the minds of many lower and middle class families. As such, fuel efficiency has become a major marketing tool by automotive companies. That being said, the American mentality regarding automobiles has long been "bigger is better"... but is it really? For this project you must find a reputable data source that provides information on total fuel efficiency (in miles per gallon) and weight (in pounds) of new model cars with automatic transmissions. You will use this data to determine if there is a relationship between the fuel efficiency of a car and its weight. Objective 1 (15 points) What do you think? Create a hypothesis regarding the relationship between fuel efficiency and weight. Do you think it would be a positive or negative relationship? Would that relationship be strong or weak?

Explanation / Answer

The hypotheses for this test are:

H0: Heavier cars have higher fuel efficiency

Ha: Heavier cars have lower fuel efficiency

The relationship will be negative, because as the weight increases more is required to move the car and hence fuel consumption is higher.

The relationship will be strong because the plot will be very close to linear.

Hope this helps !
