The independent variable is the variable that causes the change of dependent variable. The independent variable is the variable on which the researcher have control on and hence it can be manipulated so as to observe how the change happens to dependent variable corresponding to the change of independent variable. Here, the researcher measures the variation of loan obligation opinion (dependent variable) with respect to the change is college status (independent variable).
