Question

What is wrong(mistakes) with these two statetments? it could be words or numbers...

A researcher finds a large negative correlation between rom-com watching and relationship satisfaction of r = 0.44. In other words, 44% of the variability in relationship satisfaction can be accounted for by rom-com watching.

A childhood educator is interested in whether she can predict social skills as a function of eye contact in toddlers. She conducts a nonlinear regression analysis which yields the following regression equation: ? = 0.26X + 0.12. From this, she can predict that for each increase in one unit of social skills, we can add 0.26 units to eye contact.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Part a) Given statement is :

A researcher finds a large negative correlation between rom-com watching and relationship satisfaction of r = 0.44. In other words, 44% of the variability in relationship satisfaction can be accounted for by rom-com watching.

r = correlation coefficient gives the amount or degree of relationship between two related variables.

r2 = coefficient of determination gives the amount of variation in dependent variable explained by independent variable.

Thus it should be r2 = 0.442 = 0.1936 = 19.36% of the variability in relationship satisfaction can be accounted for by rom-com watching.

Thus wrong statement is : 44% of the variability in relationship satisfaction can be accounted for by rom-com watching.

Part b) A childhood educator is interested in whether she can predict social skills as a function of eye contact in toddlers. She conducts a nonlinear regression analysis which yields the following regression equation:

Y = 0.26X + 0.12. From this, she can predict that for each increase in one unit of social skills, we can add 0.26 units to eye contact.

We are given that : social skills as a function of eye contact in toddlers. Thus we have to predict social skills by using eye contact in toddlers.

Thus for each unit increase in eye contact in toddlers, there is 0.26 unit increase in Social skills.

But in the question , it says : she can predict that for each increase in one unit of social skills, we can add 0.26 units to eye contact. Thus this is incorrect statement.
