Question

Suppose we are interested in the proportion of adults in the U.S. with a bachelor's degree or higher. We randomly select 5000 adults in order to estimate this proportion. Use this information to answer questions 1-4. 1) What is the population? 2) What is the sample? 3) What is the parameter? 4) What is the statistic? 5) In the graph below, the sampling distribution for three statistics that could be used to estimate the parameter 0 is presented. Which statistic would typically give you the best estimate? Explain. 2

Explanation / Answer

In statistics the term “population” takes on a slightly different meaning. The “population” in statistics includes all members of a defined group that we are studying or collecting information on for data driven decisions. A part of the population is called a sample.

Parameters are numbers that summarize data for an entire population. Statistics are numbers that summarize data from a sample, i.e. some subset of the entire population.

1. US adults with bachelor degree is population

2. 5000 adults with bachelor degree is sample

3. Proportion of population is parameter

4. Proportion of sample is statistics
